Highspeed Wireless "OssaNet" Goes Live!

The Ossabaw wireless broadband network, telephone and wifi systems (OssaNet?) are up and saving The Ossabaw Island Foundation significant dollars compared to the previous systems. Seimitsu Corporation’s, Sam Cook, has come through with flying colors and gone far above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the north end of Ossabaw Island has a robust, scale-able and easy to use solution in place that dramatically improves phone and Internet connectivity, w…......hile lowering costs to a fraction of the previous microwave system.
The system as recently completed, is a high-speed digital wireless broadband connection spanning over 13 miles from Abercorn Street in Savannah’s Historic District. This connection is then routed to each building on the north end of the island and provides higher-speed Internet access that is actually many times faster than what city residents of even commercial customers would normally experience.
The network currently includes a line-of-sight 8mb wireless shot from Abercorn St to the DNR dock, which links to fiber optic cables leading to the main clubhouse where the signal is then run through a DSLM that provides DSL service to each of 8 locations on the north end of the island. This DSL signal also carries phone service dial tone that trunks back to a device which connects each building to its own dedicated cell-service link via T-mobile. In addition, many of the DSL termination points are also connected to wireless network routers that provide wifi Internet access around the inhabited portions of the island.
This initial network is intended to be the base system which can be expanded in the future to allow for the build-out of a real-time, remote environmental sensing system network that allows researchers and students anywhere in the world to track changing conditions in the Ossabaw environment via a web browser. This highspeed information network will greatly enhance scientists abilities to track changes, monitor sensitive conditions and facilitate their work in this rare and critical eco-system.
TOIF is indebted to Sam and his team who, despite the worst intentions of donkeys, hogs and other critters who chewed on and pulled up cables, recently completed their work, despite the somewhat unusual conditions of the remote island setting. Hats off to Sam and the Seimitsu Crew! (www.seimitsu.com)
The network was made possible with funds donated to TOIF from Savannah Electric to expand scientific and cultural capacities on the island. TOIF is working with researchers from the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography and the Alliance for Coastal Technologies to enhance our understandings of marine eco-systems along Savannah “Creative Coast” region.
The Ossabaw Island Foundation , through a public-private partnership with the State of Georgia, inspires, promotes, and manages exceptional educational, cultural, and scientific programs that are designed to maximize the experience of Ossabaw Island, while minimizing the impact on its resources.

LIVE From Ossabaw Island!

Postcards from the Edge: I am on the dock of Ossabaw Island, a remote wilderness 15 miles from Savannah, typing these words and sending these packets via the newly installed high-speed wireless broadband link! Middle of nowhere, 8MB up and 4BM down. How cool is that?!
The Ossabaw Island Foundation, in collaboration with Savannah Electric, Epproach Communications and Seimitsu, have installed a high-speed broadband wireless network and multiple Wi-Fi and VoIP access points on the north end of Ossabaw Island.
This cutting edge technology, installed on one of Georgia’s most pristine and remote barrier islands represents a unique opportunity to bring the voices and mysteries of Ossabaw Island to the world.
This allows researchers, historians, archeologists, artists and educators to develop and present their work to the world. This is one of the rare opportunities to perform cutting edge research in a remote location, while allowing real-time, world-wide access to the data and works created.
